Winter, the best season for travel and landscape photography?
16

I am quite lazy, I have not got the self-discipline to get out of bed early to catch the golden hour at some ungodly hour in the summer months and then have just a short hour or so of good light. Winter is much better, one has good low raking light even at midday. I can have good light all day long.

The hot humid Italian summer heat is missing too for me, which is a great thing as well.

Many of our “Art cities” are almost free of tourists at this time of year too. Probably, Venice is great at the moment, as was Florence when I visited in February.

This is a set that I took at Commessagio a little village in the Po Valley near Mantova( Mantua) illustrates for me quite nicely the advantages of winter shooting.

This is a curious place with an unusual boat bridge that the road into the village passes. I have written some more about this place here.

Anybody else prefer the winter for photography?

Commessagio, MN, Italy
