Moving lens vs shifting focus

Hey guys! I recently got a macro lens and I am pretty excited to try my hand at macro photography. Mostly I am interested in photographing small insects and Arthropods and maybe some interesting plants if I find any. I am currently using a tamron 90mm vc macro (f004).

I am wondering how I should go about focusing and focus stacking. I do have a tripod but no macro rail. I've mostly been using the method where you lock the focus at 1:1 and then move your body to get the subject in focus. It's definitely a challenge! I've had a few situations where focus stacking would definitely help. Should I try to do focus stacking using this method or adjust focus instead so certain parts of the subject are in focus? I've read the first method may result in some problems when stacking since the perspective changes a bit, but the second method results in frames that aren't one to one.

Thanks!
