A surprising review of the new Canon 85mm f/1.4L IS
4

Dustin Abbott posted a somewhat surprising review of the new Canon 85mm f/1.4L IS USM lens. For those who do not know, Dustin is a Canon shooter and his reviews tend to be very well considered and balanced (and it is no great secret that he is very fond of Canon's system). However, his latest review of the new 85mm is damming with faint praise. Check out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJqcXqOaOLE

TL;DW version:

1. Dustin compared the Canon 85mm f/1.4L IS USM with the Tamron 85mm f/1.8 IS. The reason stated was that they were the only 2 image stabilized lenses available for the Canon system. He did not directly compare the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 in his review, but he did compare the Sigma with the Tamron previously (overall, the Sigma was marginally sharper than the Tamron but the two were basically neck to neck otherwise).

2. The Tamron displayed considerably better resolution in the center and especially in the corners compared to the Canon, had better contrast, and suffered slightly less CA.

3. The Canon had nicer bokeh rendering. Also (needless to say), the Canon had better light transmission.

4. Overall, he did actually like the Canon's rendering, but felt that the price difference wasn't necessarily justified. He wishes that the Canon handled CA better and had more contrast, which would have made it a truly great lens. As it is, he couldn't say that it was necessarily better than the Tamron, especially in terms of resolution and contrast.

5. Final conclusion was to look at pictures from both lens and make  your own decision based on aesthetics. However, the Tamron lens was every bit as "pro" as the new Canon, and had many advantages to boot.
