M3 impressions after 1 year
Dec 9, 2017

I've had the M3 a year now and have adapted to using it reasonably within my expectations. My impressions in review of using this rig is kinda blah. Does the job though I don't particularly find any one aspect that makes me go "wow!" The size is the most liked part and that is accompanied by images that satisfying. I thought I would transition into the M5/6 but I'm not feeling the full motivation to make such a purchase.
From the image standpoint I do like this camera over the G9 and G15 because the newer technology allows me to take advantage of the 24MP and wider dynamic range. I had felt the G5X was the one to do what I wanted but the measly raw shot to shot time was off putting. I like the DOF of the G series because for the table top shots that lens system worked particularly well for my casual shooting. As an all around camera I do desire more which in specs the M3 fulfills over the GX series for the most part.
The 18-55 lens is so-so. I get the shots and the recent replacement does fine. This is where for the focal length Canon doesn't offer quite what I'd like. I can justify-rationalize that "I'm the one making the results, make the best of the situation." Still that leaves me wanting in lens performance. When the lighting becomes dim-dark, the camera struggles enough to get focus.
Some M3 shots through the year:
Pork with apples and cranberries
Steak salad
Mini rose
Pastrami sandwich
An omelette that I don't recall what was inside, lol
Peony
Castoro Cellars rainbow
Fratelli Perata Pano
