Why are mirrorless so expensive ?
1

I'm wondering why mirrorless tend to be at least as expensive as their DSLR equivalents, even though they are much simpler to make.

Here is the teardown of the new Sony A7R III:

Inside A7RIII, from Petapixel site

Basically it is a box with a sensor, a shutter and electronic parts  (and sadly no proper sealing).

In a DSLR you need to include all the viewfinder, phase detect AF and mirror box components, and to align the three optical paths with high accuracy - a very time-consuming task.

In this price range and below DSLR's have also have also properly weather sealed bodies (think Nikon d850 or Pentax K-1).

Are camera companies pushing so much for mirrorless because they are much more profitable ?
