If you pull up on said plank at the nail point, you will pull up the plank and do no harm to the plank. If you pull up on the end of the plank, the plank will bend (transfer of force) until either the plank or the nail gives in. That means the same vertical force is now being born by the plank, which bends as evidence, with less force being transferred to the nail point.
