Interesting discussion, my approach is that knowledge of "the numbers" is something that is a pre-requisite to learning how to be a photographer but its then more about having an intuitive feel for how to get the shot.

The numbers are a foundation but I would suggest that a competent photographer never has to think about that when taking "The Picture", the camera and its settings should be an automatic process and the concentration should be on taking account of all the other variables that are important, as Danny and others have already pointed out
