The non IS version is very sharp and it is hard to understand why you would feel a great difference in sharpness with the IS lens on, presumably, your 80D with a 24 MP crop sensor. Either lens should be more than adequate on that body. Differences really relate to price, weight, and the IS feature. I have the original non IS f4, have had it for about 12 years, and it is perfectly crisp on a 5DSR
