Photoconductive sensors may be a next step. Could be a win if QE is more even across colors. And would enable global electronic shutter.

Perhaps (science fiction?): charge-carrier storage photoconductive layer. The photoconductor would have to store the energy of different primaries separately (in layers, like Foveon, or on a molecular or grain level) and these could in theory be read out separately by applying readout voltage across layers in succession, or because the different color elements react with different speed or on a different voltage level).

Enough to do, but it is not a 'silicon image sensor' any more. Just a silicon readout.
