As a former woodworker, I can tell you that unless you get a really precise miter box you will not get good corners. An error of even 1/4 degree multiplied by the eight 45 degree cuts will result in a gap in one of the corners. For the price of a miter box capable of the precision needed you can buy a lot of ready made frames.
