What metering mode do you use, Mike? I use "spot".

Spot is too tight to prevent overexposure when you have any sky in the photo, unless you're measuring the sky first and then recomposing.

I should have mentioned that I do run the spot circle over the significant parts of the scene and make my mind up on the spot (!) as to what exposure to use - since every scene is different as is often my goal for that particular shot.

I usually use matrix as it cuts down on over exposures.
