The Central Market in Phnom Pen

Here are some more images from my recent trip to Phnom Pen. Once again, apologies for the problems caused by the lack of practice taking 3D pictures.

The Central Market was constructed by the French when Cambodia was part of the French Indochina empire. It was restored a few years ago and looks much nicer now than when it did the first time I visited it in 2000. The shops, however, still look to be the same as they did 17 years ago and the chaos inside hasn't changed.

The two high rise buildings were built by two foreign banks. They are mostly unoccupied but the banks gained a lot of face by building them, and in Asia face is everything.

Street stalls outside the Central Market

Stalls line the entrance routes along the arms of the Central Market.

The center part is a large open area with a high domed ceiling

The rounded openings lead out to the four arms of the Central market. The four arms are filled with shops. One arm is women's clothing and a second is men's clothing.

Jewelery shops are the main shops in the center. This one specializes in what may or may not be jade.

Clothing for the whole family is available at good prices.

Cosmetics

Ornamental bronze ware

Of course T shirts for the tourists are available.

And when you need another suitcase to take home all the things you bought in the Central Market you can find one in a sidewalk stall outside the market.
