The extra reach of the new 600 F4 USM IS II is well worth its price, particularly if you like to photograph birds. And the weight of the new 600 F4 USM IS II has been reduced to the approximate weight of the “old” 500 F4 USM IS, and that is a significant improvement. As another poster stated, one can get used to the weight of the 600 F4 USM IS II.

although the newer 600 f4.0 II has shed a lot of weight, it is still heavy for handhold photography! i can hold mine only for a few minutes before feeling my right arm slowly going south

Most of the 600 (and old 500) owners I know struggle a bit with the weight, both in use if not using a tripod, and getting around. And if you do use a tripod, it needs to be a big one and you have to carry that as well!

I can attest to that.  Either I have to sit and balance against my knees, on a car door, fence, or some other object or mount it on a gimbal.  I’ve tried some shooting sticks (lightweight alternative to a tripod) with a bit of success.
