UK pricing is quite different from U.S. pricing. G85 on release was $900 USD body only, $1,000 USD with kit lens. Those prices have held pretty steady here. G9 is not being offered with any lens, $1,700 USD for body only. That's 1.9 times the release price of the G85 here in the U.S.

Undoubtedly the G9 is not as good a value as the G85, but for virtually any consumer product (car, vacuum, audio, etc.) that is true of the high-end models. For me, the G9 is sufficiently appealing that I accept the fact that I'm not getting quite as much on a per-dollar basis as a G85 would provide. It's simply a camera I want, and I'm able to afford it at the moment, so that outweighs the "value per dollar" factor, for me.

And perhaps Panasonic will drop the price once they've squeezed the top dollar from early adopters like me.

Additionally, the G9 is NOT the successor in the G5/G6/G7/G85 line; its the top end model in the DSLR style body, basically improving on the ~$2000 GH5 for stills while making some compromises on the video side. Compared to the G85 there many improvments:  Grip, dual slots, 225 AF points, faster AF, larger EVF, larger eye cup, high-res mode, faster e-shutter, 6K mode, faster burst, etc

Price notwithstanding, my prediction is that early adopters will be very pleased with the shooting performance and subsequent image quality of the G9. I think its going to be a big hit.
