You should treat sooc-JPEGs like slide film (remember that?) - i.e. only expect great results if the lighting is good and if the exposure is spot on.

Your particular example suffers from horrible lighting.

I appreciate that in many cases you can't control all the variables for casual grab-shots like that, but I would argue that if that's your main intended application, then no, sooc-JPEGs aren't the right tool for the job.

In other words, you can't improve/salvage a badly lit / exposed JPEG shot . That's what RAW is good for. But for more careful / controlled photography, then Fuji's sooc-JPEGs can be just gorgeous, IMHO.
