Would smartphone software make DSLRs much better?
1

Like many, I'm impressed by the ability of smartphone cameras to produce very acceptable images, even in low light.

Now this can't be because of their sensors, which must be about the size of mouse turds.

No, they are doing it through software. And the rate of new software development at firms like Apple and Samsung is astoundingly fast, particularly compared to glacial progress in the hidebound 'real' camera industry.

Imagine what would happen if you let these programmers loose on improving images from m4/3 or APS-C sensors! I believe it is very possible that you would get IQ equal to medium format, with on-the-fly software removing low-light noise and so forth. Overcoming the physical limitations of only so many photons falling on a given sensor area. Perhaps via AI... inferential generation of a better picture based on analysis of the original poor picture.

Samsung, get back in the camera business!
