Sensor size vs technology?

Greetings all,

I've been wondering if the small sensor was really going to die.  I have an old 400D/XTi Canon.  I was told to keep the ISO down to 400.  Then I got the Panasonic FZ200 and was told the same.  Now, as the Canon has a much larger sensor, so captures more light, less noise, now with the more modern and much smaller sensors are they now the same?  And with the improvement in software and editing, what is the future? My thought is, with the smaller sensor, you can get longer zoom.  If the software and improvement in sensor design makes it easier to make much better images while keeping a compact form factor, not changing lenses and achieving good images, maybe the larger sensors might not be needed, for the non pro. Even looking at pros going to mirriorless/ M4/3  Is the tide changing?
