D5500 Manual Focus Technique? (50mm f/1.8D)

I have a D5500 and picked up a cheap 50mm f/1.8D. I knew it wouldn't have auto-focus, but I wasn't very worried about that. My old Minolta was so slow and unreliable at auto-focus I used to put it into manual focus and just judge/guess/hope through the viewfinder.

I noticed the D5500 is trying to assist me in manual focus - I can move the focus point around with the d-pad and it'll light up the focus light when it thinks it has something there in focus. Sweet!

Is there anything else my D5500 can do to help me out when using a manual lens that I might be missing?

[Someday I will save up for the 50mm 1.8G, but it's outside my price range at the moment. Not yet convinced the autofocus on the Yongnuo is worth the drop in quality]
