Curious On Techniques Used

This guy produces some interesting work . Though not my cup of tea, the photos individually are, to me, quite interesting; surreal. Each element within a given photo looks like, well, a photo of something, but taken in altogether as a single photo, it doesn't look like a photo at all. Difficult to explain.

What are techniques used to get this? Is it what people refer to as "tone mapping" or tonal compression? It does seem as though there is a lot of compositing going on, but I'm talking that hyper .... whatever look the photos seem to have.
