Automated ISO mode

How this work in cameras?  Mirrorless and DSLR live view could measure how much there is room before something clips with current exposure settings and calculate optimal ISO setting automatically. I don't know why manual ISO settings usually have so big steps, but technically a camera could use ISO setting like 4721, if needed?

Clipping tolerance is a bit more personal, so automated ISO mode should have some kind of setting as a starting point and quick way to fine tune it before shooting the photo.
