3. take the front part of the lens and pull gently but firmly. with a little bit of manipulating the housing will slide off. Be carefull to hold the lens pointed upward so the parts of the lens cap will not fall off.

Can someone who has attempted this clarify which part to hold and which part to pull?

Canon G7X with lens cover parts marked -- where do I pull, where do I hold to take it off?

In other words, which part is expected to stay and which part is expected to come off?

My first G7x mki lens cover got stuck when I didn't notice some dried syrupy droplets on the camera. Took it apart and applied rubbing alcohol to the blades and it was back to normal. Sold it off to try the G5x (has the same lens) before giving it to my mom. So far no issue with that one.

Earlier in the week, I saw a used G7x mki with an occasionally sticking blade on the cover. The owner reduced the price quite a bit so I decided to revisit this camera. Pulled off item 1/2 in this photo to expose the blades and cleaned them up. It seemed to be all fixed but then started sticking again. After a careful look, I saw that the flange on part 1 between the lettering of IS and 2.8 was slightly curved in. Took it apart again and rubbed a blunt round end of pen plug on it to bring it back to true. That appears to have been the real issue.
