Off-Camera Flash for Indoor Party

So, the wife and I are hosting an early ThanksGiving get-together today, and serving up a big meal for 20 people.

I set up my flashgun in one corner of the room, to bounce off the ceiling and flood the room, with emphasis on lighting the table area.

Took some test shots with the barenaked flash, and with the white shoot-through umbrella, both shots bounced off the ceiling.

I was expecting the umbrella to fill the room more with light, but was surprised to find that the barenaked flashgun put more light onto the table, during the test.

Anyone care to comment on the apparent loss of light through the umbrella?

Below is a snapshot of the setup for today...

Light stand in left corner, table to lower-right....this shot illuminated by on-camera pop-up flash.
