some tropical weirdness
7

Once a year, after the first decent rains, these oddities pop up in vine forests across the Top End.  They are a type of rafflesia - closely related to the corpse flower (which is the biggest of all flowers).  These don't grow to the scale of the corpse flower, but are still quite big (about lettuce sized).  In common with the corpse flower, their 'fragrance' is remarkably similar to rotting meat (which is is how I usually find them) - they choose flies over bees when it comes to reproduction.

Not especially beautiful, but pretty cool all the same. (Anyone who's seen 'Little Shop of Horrors' may be vaguely reminded of Audrey.)
