Difference of a dedicated Wide Angle Lense 14-24 vs 24-70 on low end.

I have been checking out numerous people's pics on here and WOW,  great pics that everyone is sharing.

I am really digging the look of the wide angle pics,  the ever so soft bow to the pic (not fisheye) and the depth of field.  I had a chance to tinker with the Nikon 10-20  on a D7200 body and the pics were what I like.  My current lense is 18mm on the bottom end and I can't get that same "effect".

As I am researching lenses,  I see people telling DX shooters to get lower than a 24mm walk around lense say in the 15-18mm range.

Do you need a dedicated W/A lense for that soft bow look to the pics?  Please forgive me as I am still very new to this hobby.
