Lightroom Catalog Question

I just recently started to use Lightroom Classic and I am still learning to fully understand it.

I have all my photos stored on an external hard drive (because I don't have enough space on my laptop's internal drive). That's fine and I don't want to change this.

Currently I also have my catalog stored on the same external hard disk. However, I understanding that I could as well store that catalog on my internal drive and that doing so would make starting up the catalog faster (correct?)

The Lightroom Catalog.lrcat file (238MB) and the backups folder (573MB) would fit on my internal drive. But there's also a Lightroom Catalog Previews.lrdata file which is 101GB(!) in size. I don't have enough space on my internal drive for this file.

What is best practice here? Should I just continue to keep everything (i.e. the photos and the catalog files) on my external hard drive?
