Could I Have Fried The Circuits?

I've had a Sony HVL-20 something flash for a couple of years and it's always worked well enough for my meager needs.

It's been in a drawer for six months and when I pulled it out yesterday it didn't turn on as expected. I figured the batteries were dead so I popped open the door and found that both batteries were installed positive end up.

I've replaced the batteries with properly installed, fully charged Enoloops and the flash unit still doesn't turn on as it should.

Could I have fried the circuits of my beloved flash unit by incorrectly installing the batteries? Maybe there is a total reset button somewhere I don't know about? Help.
