Android best solution for off line backup?

Going on a trip out on the islands of Philippines and I want to travel light. I'd like to be able to back up my SD cards locally on a Sandisk SSD. I am very close to buying a cheap Kingston MobileLite G2 for just $35 or so but I am not sure about the backup robustness and user friendliness. App seems so so and transfer time really slow.

Thus I got the idea to (just for back up and browsing pictures) buy a cheap used Android device, phone or tablet and combine it with a OTG USB/SD hub. (I'm stuck with Apple and all the drawbacks that brings.)

I guess this will be much faster than the Kingston G2 option? And also more stable and hopefully with a better interface where files can be copied only if file names don't already exist in target folder? (So I can back up only the photos not already copied since I want to backup more often than I fill the SD card in my camera.)

What transfer speed can I hope for? Can I get good speed also with a bit older device?

Really appreciating some help here!
