Why do you think Canon will charge that much more for adding IS to the 400 f/5.6?
I would expect an increase in the neighborhood of $400-$500 (consistent with the bump from original to version II of the 100-400) when combined with other improvements.
After all there are Canon lenses with IS that cost less that $300 in total.

I think Canon won't do anything more with that lens, as the 100-400 ll is just as good if not better with more versatility.  I would like to see them make a 500 F5.6 with IS to replace the 400 F5.6.  That would be a big seller.  However, it would cut into sales of the big whites and the DO's  so I don't think we'll see it.  The 200-600 has a place in my bag, but still waiting.
