The 70-200 Breathing Bogey Bokeh Test

A friend pointed out that I could easily do this test just with the 70-200 F4, so here goes...

These are from the same distance, about 5-6 feet. The stopped down shot is at a true 200mm. I then set the same lens to 135-140mm so that it would duplicate the lens breathing of the 70-200 VRII, but open the lens to F4.

have a look...

So? Was the wider aperture able to compensate for the magnification?

Nope.

Subject isolation is still superior (as is bokeh with good lenses) at the true 200mm, even stopped down. If this does not convince some people that the F4 lens is superior to the VRII for closer work (assuming you want more control of DOF), I will soon post pics showing the VRII lens to remove any lingering doubt.  So standby for that!
