Is a 105-300 F4 unlikely?

A black, yes black, 100-300 F4 would be my ideal travel lens to go with the 24-105f4c, Compatible with the 1.4x to provide a 420 5.6 as needed and 630mm 5.6 in aps-c crop mode for long tele. Weight could be minimised to around 1kg.

Is it highly unlikely we will ever see a 100-300 f4c considering the current 70-200f4/70-300f4.5/-5.6 and obviously the 100-400.

Probably not, considering Sony has the 100-400 and the 70-300 already out there. Some other manufacturer might come along and make the lens, but at this point I wouldn't count on Sony to deliver in the next few years.

1kg? Very unlikely. My old Tokina AT-X 340 for Nikon AF-D is a big lens thats weighs 1.6kg and if I lookup the Sigma it's just the same.

I don't think such a lens will be released by Sony, even the Sigma is out of production for some years.

Back to a 70-200 2.8 then, in white!

It's certainly possible (Sigma have their excellent 120-300 2.8), but I just don't think there would be much of a market for it..

Yes.

Don't forget we already have an excellent SEL70300G, so no need for an 105-300, I believe... :)

All the best,
Pedro

It is possible to have a 100-300mm F4 lens, but not possible to weigh 1kg unless some special glass like DO or PF being used.

300/4 will be at least 25mm longer in diameter than 200/4 (75mm-50mm=25mm). And 70-200/4 is already around 800g.

Moreover, the lightest 300mm/4 lens is Nikon 300mm PF VR, but it has a special PF element. All other 300mm F4 fixed focus lenses are over 1kg. So it is not possible to have a 100-300mm F4 zoom lens without special element at 1kg.

FE720/4 and FE730 are the best choice now.

Just don't see it happening from Sony... as you mention there is already a 70-300, two 70-200's, a 100-400, etc...

If another brand wants to have a different offering is about the only way I see that working but at those lengths fully operating AF would be required so not the easiest third party lens to make.

Sounds like really you just want a black lens rather than white. I don't like the white either, I believe it is for sun exposure reasons but seems to me more buyers would rather than lens not stand out so much.

The 70-300 is black and a fine lens for travel though. The same thing F4 would be much larger so not really a good travel option.

I too think it's somewhat unlikely - at least in the near term.

Specifically, I think Sony is likely to focus on filling out areas where there might be perceived gaps before adding lenses that have a lot in common with existing offerings, and the 70-300 would seem to come close to meeting most of your criteria.

Beyond that kind of general observation (informed by what we've seen to date from Sony), I guess none of us has a crystal ball. And those with any special/insider insight are not going to be able to divulge anything here... ; )

Unlikely. But you can add 1.4x TC on FE 70-200/2.8 GM to become a 98-280mm f4.0 zoom, close enough and more versatile :-)

Hope Sigma will release e-mount Art and Sport series lenses soon including its 120-300mm f2.8 zoom.
