Nikon 1...what might have been...

Just an idle thought, after reading discussion on the m43 forum.

A problem the 1 system had a while back was that the competition from m43 was too strong and diversified in terms of compact bodies and lenses.

But it does seem to me that m43 has drifted into a direction where both Oly and Pany are focusing on larger, more expensive bodies and lenses. The G9 is really big and heavy for a small sensor camera, and the latest Panasonic 200 f2.8 is almost comically large and expensive.

Of course the response on the m43 forum is "but the other bodies are still in production". This is true. But below the top of the range (GH5, G9, OMD E1mk2) there seems to be a mish-mash of not very compelling bodies - either budget cameras with modest specs, or somewhat dated cameras again without the top specs, which aren't particularly small (eg. GX8).

The original V1 had a great EVF, great AF and the best sensor in a small body. You won't get the top EVF-sensor-AF combo in m43 unless you spend nearly $2000 and buy a relatively large body. The fast lenses are getting pretty big too.

Ironically, if Nikon had developed a V4 and a few more lenses I think the 1 System would fill more of a gap in the market now than a few years back.
