Accessing the Commander Mode for flash use on the X-E3

I want to use my new X-E3 in my studion with my Elinchrome flash units, and have mounted the Elinchrome EL Skyport Speed trigger on my flash shoe.
Following the manual, I put my shutterspeed on X180, and select the flash menu. My manual tell me to chose the Commander mode. I have used my X100s in similar way with no problems. But the only options the camera gives me is Manual or Flash off.
Additionally, although it works in Manual mode, the lens closes down the aperture to the set f stop so at higher f numbers my image goes very dim in the viewfinder.
I am sure it is a case of user error, but I cant seem to work my way around this issue.
Any suggestions?
