I used a D700 and D300 alongside each other on shoots for a couple of years, until investing in a D3s.

The AF performance was effectively identical between the two, even in dark situations.

i use a D300s and a D700 alongside each other.

the D300s has noticeably worse AF even in daylight, for sports. it just doesn't lock on as fast unless you're using the cross-type sensors.
