You appear to have the same feeling that I have and that is the camera is not head on to the group of people, those to the left being further away than those to the right. Whether that's enough to make the difference at the F stop I don't know.

If that were the cause, you'd expect the the bushes on the far right of the frame, 1/3 up from the bottom, to show more detail than they do (have a look at the same bushes on the left edge of the frame).

It's a defective lens, no question.
