Hi there,

I still have my s5pro which I bought 8-9 years ago although my main camera now is a x100 original. In the past I primarily shot slide film and the s5 was my first digital camera.

For me sharpness was never really a priority (I think my default settings are sharpness and noise reduction both set to off/minimum), and in my opinion if you only focus on this one aspect then the camera is bound to let you down. For me the s5 has always excelled at handling colour, tonality and dynamic range, and then combining these aspects into often magical images.

The camera doesn’t really handle high iso so well so my suggestion would be to use a fast prime. My s5 has had a Nikon DX 35mm f1.8 on it for the last 5 years - this is a cheap and cheerful lens which will allow you to play for little money.

And I would like to highlight the word ‘play’. I reckon the s5 is a great camera to experiment and have fun with. Look for crazy high contrast scenes just to see what happens. Take more photos of people. Shoot back-lit subjects, get some flare into the frame. And shoot JPEG. Maybe after a while you will see something like the magic I see in many of my s5 images.

One last suggestion. Try the black and white JPEG mode of this camera. I used to shoot a lot of b&w film before my slide film days and the s5 got me hooked again. If you haven’t shot black and white before maybe you’ll get addicted!

good luck, and give the s5 a chance to show you what it can do!
