AF point selection

I am not sure if this is a question exposing my ignorance, or an obvious question.
Much discussion in threads about the X-E3 and others, about using a joy stick or touch screen to select the AF point in your frame.
I have a X100s, and a X-T1, and in both, point my camera to the item in the frame that I want to be the AF point, half press down the shutter button until my focus indicator turns up green, then reframe and take my picture.
I think I have been using same method for years in my Canon 5DII
Can anyone explain why the two new methods I noted above would be any better then the third one I use?
Do they produce more accurate focus?
Or is it just a sales gimmick?

ANSWER:
Fujifilm X100S Fujifilm X-T1
