In praise of Group AF!
15

I was on the lake, yesterday, when a heron broke cover and took flight unexpectedly.  I had no time to pre-focus, or compose.  The lighting was tricky, combining very bright sunlight with deep shadows.  The background was complicated.

The camera was set to Group AF, centre-weighted metering, manual exposure and auto ISO.   I fired off nine frames in two seconds.  Between each frame, the camera refocussed and re-evaluated the exposure.  It nailed every shot.   Knowing this sort of performance is possible, theoretically, is one thing.  Experiencing it is quite another!    Twenty or thirty years ago, I would have been thrilled to get just one of these shots.  Learning to take advantage of the D500's potential has been a very rewarding endeavour.
