What if mechanical shutter is removed?

I am having a kind of crazy idea of getting a mirrorless with electronic shutter and removing the mechanical shutter, so that there's no obstacles between the mount to CMOS. In this way it would be possible to focus some unusually lenses with very short back focus distance (like 5mm). Any thoughts on this? One concern I have is would cameras usually do some self check when starting up? If it cannot find shutter, would it report some error and refuse to function?
