I don't use Lightroom but need to understand this 'news' article better

I quit shooting professionally back when film was the only professional medium so I have little to no need today (I guess?) to stay at the leading edge technologically in hardware or software.

I just read a news article on DPR and since I still haven't even gotten my feet wet in post processing (yet), I have some questions.

First off, I simply am not convinced that I need a perpetual monthly-updated subscription and prefer, instead, Lightroom 6 for its one-time cost.  After reading this news article on DPR today, my question is this: Has there been a very recent change that triggered the writing of this article?  Or is the author simply highlighting conditions that have existed for quite some time?

If the answer is "no" to the former question, there is no reason to elaborate further, at least not for my benefit.

If something has changed recently, how would that affect Lightroom 6 users (emphasis on recently)
