Canon G1X III = Ricoh GX300
1

When the GX100 was released there was very little in the market with its specs. With a 24-72mm equivalent lens in 2007, most other compacts had 28mm lenses at the wide. The Canon G and S series were at 35 to 28, most other manufacturers were between 35 and 38mm, and only the Kodak Easyshare V something went to 23mm due to its clever dual-lens design.

Since 2007, the value of wide angle lenses was picked up, and now almost every compact camera has 28mm at the widest, and 24mm is now a standard thanks to companies like Panasonic. A 24-70mm range is now very common, even with larger sensor compacts like the Sony RX100 II upwards, the Canon G7X, Panasonic LX10, etc.  But it started with Ricoh, who was the first entrant in this lens range in a compact camera.

While some in this forum have wanted a GX300, Canon has now created its spiritual upgrade in the G1X Mark III. It has the same zoom range, similar aperture range, similar body shape and has an EVF. With ten years of advancement and the large sensor knowhow of Canon behind it, the III will be better than the GX200 in every way except for size and battery life. As I said in another forum, the III is essentially a midrange DSLR with a kit lens that can fit in a large pocket.

It's interesting to see how technology has improved but we've come full circle in some regards. The Canon G1X III of today is the Ricoh GX100 of ten years ago. Where will we be in another ten years?
