Whats your second/backup camera?

Interested to know what peoples take is on this..

I'm starting to delve into paid work (VERY low end, no more than beer tokens), and I'm getting to the point where I'm considering adding a backup body. There's 3 things I'm looking to gain from it:

  1. To be a backup should the A9 go down..
  2. To use for split under/over water photography with a Meikon dome (A7x range only available at present)
  3. Long term, to use as a dual 35mm & 85mm shooter

I've pretty much got my options down as follows:

  • Canon M3. PRO: Cheapest underwater solution (with kit lens), 22mm f2 also gives 35mm equivalent, same MP output as A9. CON: Not interchangeable with current glass, not up to IQ standards as a 'true' backup
  • Sony A7II. PRO: Most cost effective FF solution, same MP output as A9, could hold it's own in a dual cam setup with A9. CON: Doesn't really offer anything 'different' from the A9
  • Sony A7SII. PRO: 12MP will be enough for underwater & have excellent DR, offers more flexibility if looking to explore video (although not currently on roadmap). CON: would struggle to hold it's own as dual cam setup.

It looks like the A7II is going to be the one for me, but I'm interested to know what other peoples take is on their backup/second camera? Do you look for a duplicate of your primary, or looking for something different?
