D850: 12 vs 14 bit RAW
3

I was looking at Bill Claff's charts.

http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR_D850.htm#Nikon%20D850(14)

http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/RN_ADU_D850.htm#Nikon%20D850_14

Given there is a significant increase in buffer when using 12 bit, I wanted to see what compromises I would have to make when using 14 bit.

From the comparison charts, it seems that:

1. Re Photographic Dynamic Range: No discernible difference beyond ISO 200,

2. Re Read Noise vs ISO: 12 bit is actually better! How come? Can someone explain?

So for wildlife shooters, there is no penalty - none - when using 12 bit RAW. Given that 99% of the time we are above ISO 200.

And when shooting landscape/nature and using low ISO, one can always switch back to 14 bit .
