Windows 10 Help

So I'm trying to update my kid's Win 10 laptop.

When I first power it on, it seemed to be trying to install some updates. Apparently, at least one failed. I rebooted and said try again. Then it appeared to download a much larger set of updates.

Now it's been stuck on "Getting Windows ready..." for a couple of hours. This is an i7 machine with 8GB RAM and a SSD, so that's pretty insane.

I tried powering off but these machines (Lenovo E470) default to a suspend versus a shutdown and reboot. So, the second I power it on again, I'm back to the dreaded spinning balls and "Getting Windows ready...".

What next? Pull the power cord and wait for the battery to run down?
