Alaska cruise - any value in bringing tripod?

While on the ship that is? So we'll be cruising past Hubbard Glacier, into Glacier Bay and all throughout the inside passage, just wondering if I should bring my tripod and set it up on my balcony and/or deck? I'm thinking for wildlife shots I'll need to hand hold, especially whales, since I'll have no idea where they'll surface until they do. But for glacier shots, or slow moving/no moving wildlife, will a tripod help with my image stabilized 70-300L?

Also, if I remember, I disable IS when on the tripod but in this case, with the ship moving and all, does it still make sense to disable IS?
