Keep practicing. Try with tracking autofocus and slower birds to begin with. Yes, keep the shutter speed up and remember the bird will often be underexposed against a relatively bright sky, so experiment with your exposure settings and using a bit of exposure compensation. You may as well use a fast, continuous shutter to give you a series (variables such as the wing position of it's flapping can make a big difference). Oh, and keep practicing.
