A few things to bear in mind:

The in-camera JPG started off as RAW too, but the camera processed it in accordance with the presets.  The RAW when it is opened with DPP uses those presets by default but you can readily change them and this can be particularly important in a couple of scenarios:

i) You want to change the white balance

ii) You have a wider dynamic range (dark to light) than the JPG can accommodate and you want to make your own choices whether they be reduce the highlights, raise the shadows, change the white point etc.

Bear in mind that these changes are all non-destructive and DPP allows opening either the last saved image or the image as shot.

As mentioned elsewhere if you have a high dynamic range photo (take a picture with buildings and sea or sky for instance) then DPP allows single shot HDR.  Try it - it's free.

A further and often overlooked feature is that DPP has Digital Lens Optimisation (DLO) which reduces the errors in Canon lenses.

Your sample image doesn't have enough of a challenge to make much difference whether editing the RAW or the JPG so a good JPG editor will do a fine job.

I shoot RAW exclusively as at a minimum it is only a matter of Select All -> Batch Process and the images are exported as JPG if I want to make no changes.  I don't bother with RAW+JPG.

There are tutorials on the Canon Digital Learning site.  DPP is regularly updated though it is a 'global' editor and so if you want to change parts of your image you'll need another tool.

DPP is generally well regarded as a RAW convertor even among some of the professionals and it comes at a good price
