How big can you print?

A question we hear a lot. How many pixels do we need to print an x by y enlargement. Of course the answer is always Depends on how good your original is and how picky you are with the results.

So I decided to try something, just to see what could be expected.

I took a nice original photo from my old FZ28 that was shot in 16 x 9 format.

I then cropped it to the required 3 x 2 format I was looking for, giving a total of

6.26 megapixels.

From there I did a little noise reduction and resharpening and bumped up the contrast a tad.

Then in Paintshop Pro x8 I resized it to 10,200 x 6800 pixels using the bicubic method.

I then sent the 39 megabyte file to Costco to create a 20 " x 30" canvas.

Looks pretty good except that some of the green was lost along the way.

Here is the print leaning up against a mirror because there was more lighting there.

So going from a 6.2 megapixel shot to a 20 inch by 30 inch canvas print is altogether reasonable IMHO.
