Replacing an old AIS lens with new ED lens worth the price?

I have a Nikon D800 and have been using my old AIS lenses for at least three years.  As I posted earlier, my 35mm F2.8 AIS's feature stopped working so I have been looking into a new Nikon lens (Nikon 35mm F1.8/AF-S G Ed) to replace it.  I bought the old lens from Hong Kong around 1983 and this new lens first came on the market in 2014.

Would I get a noticeable improvement in image quality (sharpness, color, etc.) with this new lens?  I would not want to spend over 500 bucks for not much of a quality improvement.

Thank you.

Nikon D800
