Anticipation coupled with questions and concerns...

I have, for a long time, been in the market for excellent, advanced enthusiast models - starting way back with the likes of the Canon G3, Pro 1, Nikon Coolpix 5700, 8700, 8800, Olympus C7070, C8080, and so many more. And yes, they have always been expensive with prices ranging (retail) from $800 through $1500 (even a decade ago). And we we're talkin' models with CCD's ranging in size from the very small 1/1.7" versions up to 2/3" models (which is below the current 1" versions). And their high ISO responses often stopped at ISO 400 and it was best to keep them at ISO 50 to 100 - no higher, due to the noise levels at the time.

Yet here we are - at the end of 2017 - being faced with this pending gorgeous APS-C size sensor model that will be built like a tank, is weather proofed, has an excellent, lens, etc. And they are asking $1299 retail for it (and a friekin' lens hood for $50 - really?). The price so much isn't the big issue here (at least for me, although I won't initially be running to get one).

My focus is now is that I have to question where Canon is going here. Something like this "may" very well cannibalize their EOS-M line of cameras. Think about it here - the M line feature models that will appear very similar to this pending G1X III, and with the current lack of EF-M lenses, what could happen? I have several M cameras - love 'em really - but this pending G1X III is now posed to overlap (replace) the M line?

As an M user, this makes me question Canon's focus/dedication toward their APS-C sized M line of cameras.  With all of the rumors around future M series models that will feature a full framed sized sensor, does this new G1X III project what Canon is now looking at in the future - that is, placing this APS-C sized sensor in Powershot models (phasing out their current M line), while future Canon mirrorless options will be centered around FF options.

What do you folks think here?
