Can compact camera stay relevant?

Looked at camera timelines of major companies. Fewer launches than previous years. Notably, compacts missing. We know, it's because mobiles have taken over compacts.

Say a new compact is made to beat specific mobile weakness. A sensor size and zoom that the 'thin' mobiles just can't accommodate, in approx 10x5x1.5 cm body (easily pocketable, my wifi dongle is that size).

I am confident Canon Nikon Fujifilm can create such a device, that can produce better images than iPhone 8. Their expertise should be more, right. Another important feature required would be seamless syncing.

Convincingly market it, that what ever your iPhone8/Pixel2 can achieve, the new age compact can achieve better. The biggest restraint, as always will be the cost. If it can be sold at half the price, people should be interested.

Even a nexus compact can be there. Couple big names, pooling their resources (financial and intellectual)

Is it not possible? Size, features, performance, price, a combination of all these to attract the consumers. Is that too much to ask for?
